Biography

Michael Scolamiero was appointed Executive Director of Pennsylvania Ballet in June 1997. Under his leadership, Pennsylvania Ballet has achieved financial stability while sustaining significant artistic growth. Mr. Scolamiero was instrumental in creating major gift and planned giving programs as well as comprehensive sponsorship programs, and developing the Repertory Fund, a funding mechanism to create new works. He also spearheaded a restructuring of the administrative staff to reflect the changing workforce and enable the organization to operate more efficiently. Most significantly, Mr. Scolamiero led Pennsylvania Ballet through its first capital campaign, which exceeded its $10,000,000 goal by more than $2,000,000. The campaign helped Pennsylvania Ballet establish an endowment and underwrite its first international touring appearance at the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland.

Mr. Scolamiero's commitment to Pennsylvania Ballet's continued artistic growth stems from his artistic background. A trained musician, he values and appreciates the role of the arts in our society and is committed to providing increased opportunities for others to experience and enjoy classical ballet. Working with Pennsylvania Ballet's Artistic Director, Roy Kaiser, Mr. Scolamiero is an advocate for creating new ballets, refurbishing existing productions, and seeking new venues at which the Ballet can perform and expand its audience.

Prior to Pennsylvania Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero served as Executive Director of the Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia. During his seven years at Choral Arts, the organization recorded seven consecutive operating surpluses, significantly reduced its debt, and premiered several large, symphonic choral works at the Academy of Music. Prior to the Choral Arts Society, Mr. Scolamiero was Administrative Manager for the Haddonfield Symphony, and Executive Director of the West Jersey Chamber Music Society, a professional chamber orchestra and chorus based in Moorestown, New Jersey.

Originally from the northern New Jersey community of Pompton Plains, Mr. Scolamiero earned a Bachelor of Science degree in music education with a focus on clarinet and piano at Lebanon Valley College, in Annville, Pennsylvania. Upon graduating magna cum laude from Lebanon Valley, he completed a Master of Music degree in clarinet performance at The Pennsylvania State University's main campus in State College.

Mr. Scolamiero is on the board of directors of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and the Arts and Business Council. He resides in Center City.
